The Growth of Memes

A cultural quote is an expression, idea, or behavior that becomes popular through repeated imitation in a society and often carries cultural meaning reflecting a specific happening or theme. It can be anything, everything from a cute quote for baby shower gifts to a cultural history lesson on African art. A Cultural Quote is almost always based around a person, place, or thing. For example, here's an example of a famous cultural quote: "Don't knock fish you can't eat." This has been used a lot in comedy skits, but it actually originates from the ethic of Zen Buddhism, which says, "One can't really get to the essence of something through the senses."

There are plenty of different types of Memes that people use. One type of Meme that's very popular is the Backwardscumulative Postcard. These are often used as prank gifts at parties, but also used as stickers for cars and refrigerators. There are even companies who market products with these kind of back stickers, all with the same basic message - "I'll never stop thinking about you."

Another popular kind of Meme is the Bathroom Meme. Here, a person goes into a public bathroom and puts a sticker on the mirror or door that says, "I'm a Douche Bag." Over time, this can lead to a very popular collection of photos of people wearing tacky costumes, holding up their douches, and so forth. While this might seem like a good way to express your patriotism or an opinion, it's probably not a good idea to wear a sticker in your bathroom.

Then, there's the Anti-Bullying Meme. Everyone has seen endless jokes about school students catching herpes from other students on playgrounds, in school libraries, and anywhere else. People love making fun of others, especially those that they feel slighted by. This is where the Anti-Bullying Meme comes in.

Basically, all the stereotypes you've heard about over the years comes together in this one. People are so mad about something that they're willing to do anything to get a rise out of someone else. The most popular version of this is probably the Oklahoma Boy Meme, which features a picture of a boy holding up a sign saying, "I AM BOSS IN LIKE MANY!" If you put that on a car, it would drive around town, get stolen, and then be put up all over town (including on bike racks). That could be pretty dangerous.

The Celebrity Memes is just as popular. We see them everywhere - the Internet, locker rooms, and the reaction is always, "What happened to that celebrity?" Usually it's not too long before people start making fun of the person for being so famous. Of course, there are also plenty of happy reactions to the Celebrity Memes, like seeing a cute baby kicking ball (a baby kick ball!).

All in all, Memes are extremely popular and have been for quite some time now. Some have become so popular that they are even referenced in pop culture, like when President Obama made a reference to them during his election campaign. Some are funny, some are obscene, but most are just a little slice of the culture that makes us all who we are. It's always great to see new trends and creations.
