What Are Memes?

A common joke that has become popular on the internet is a quote. A quote is a thought, quote, or even a cultural concept that becomes a trend and is commonly spread by word of mouth from person to other in a culture. Quotes are often quoted by celebrities and are used online as well. For example, George Carlin's quote "Gee, I wonder if the President will give us a memo that says we are too fat?"

One example of a quote being widely quoted throughout the internet and elsewhere would be a quote by Richard Stallone. He said, "It's not my fault my film isn't getting shown. No one wants to watch a faggy film." Stallone is a much loved American actor and has been quoted as such on numerous occasions. Many people are familiar with his work and enjoy his style of humor, including the teen comedies and movies he has produced.

When someone asks you a question about a current event in the news, chances are that they are talking about it and most likely have come across a related article by now. These online articles are known as Memes. Memes are short bits of stories, quotes, or even songs that are quickly shared and spread across the web and appear to be quite popular among certain groups of people. The recent celebrity story involving Sarah Palin with a young man from Alaska was quickly labeled a "meme".

Celebrities are also embracing the world of online Memes. There are several famous people who have their own personal collections of popular ones to share with fans. Britney Spears has her own song named after a popular quote and many believe her famous song was the first one to use the word "Sob shed". Snoop Dogg has a series of videos entitled "HipHop Memes", featuring his unique brand of conversational comedy and is a huge fan of the hip-hop community.

What exactly is a Meme? A Meme is usually an internet based collage of data, images, or song lyrics that are posted on the internet and become viral in some way. They are often created by someone with a large following of followers and are shared by others all over the web. The first step in creating a Meme is to find a large group of people that have a similar sense of humor, sharing the sentiment. From there, all that is required is creative thinking and a solid understanding of the culture that the piece represents.

How do you know if a Meme is popular? A great way to tell if a current trend is popular is to look for conversations within the culture of the piece. If there is a lot of talk about a topic of interest, that means that the culture is growing and people are talking about it.

What are some examples of a Meme? The original "scoot so deep" was a video that went viral within days, as were the more recent videos of President Obama giving speeches. The Bible, McDonald's, and Japanese animation are all considered to be a Meme. The biggest question is, how will they continue to shape our culture?
